With over 25 years of experience in treating medical and surgical conditions of the anterior segment of the eye, Dr Apel has published peer reviewed journals, lectured internationally and is involved in the training of future Ophthalmologists. He is a Senior Visiting Ophthalmologist and Chair of the Qualification and Education Committee at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Queensland Eye Hospital, and a Director of Queensland Laser Vision.
Dr Apel has a special interest in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, utilising cutting-edge Intraocular Lenses, Implantable Contact Lenses, and Laser Surgery techniques including LASIK and PRK. Dr Apel performs a high volume of corneal transplantations, including full thickness Penetrating Keratoplasty, and is a leader in his field for Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).
To facilitate better care and treatment of Keratoconus patients, he established the Keratoconus Care Clinic, with Riboflavin Corneal Collagen Crosslinking utilised in progressive cases. Other surgical interests include Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Autograft and the treatment of Ocular Surface Neoplasia. As a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist (DAO) for CASA, Dr Apel examines the ocular health of pilots, air traffic controllers, Police Force and the Defence Force personnel.
Founder of The Eye Health Centre, a collaborative care clinic model, Dr Apel is supported by six clinically trained optometrists who have technical expertise in advanced Contact Lens Fitting and the treatment of advanced Dry Eye Disease, including the E-eye IPL treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

His subspecialty interests include cataract surgery, corneal and lens based refractive surgery, lamellar corneal transplant surgery (such as DMEK, DSAEK and DALK), pterygium surgery and the management of medical and surgical anterior segment disease.
