Meet the Team

The team at The Eye Health Centre are committed to providing exceptional eyecare services to every patient. We strive to make your eyecare journey as smooth and comfortable as possible. As a collaborative care clinic, both ophthalmology and optometry services are available. Patients can be seen by our Ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Apel, or by one of our clinical optometrists for triage, pre- or post-operative assessment or independent clinical management. All of the optometrists working with Dr Apel are highly trained in clinical assessment and management in accordance with Dr Apel’s methods and protocols.

Dr Andrew Apel

Ophthalmologist

Dr Andrew Apel is a leading Corneal and External Eye Disease Physician. He completed his Ophthalmology training in Brisbane, then undertook a two year Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada in 1992.

With over 25 years of experience in treating medical and surgical conditions of the anterior segment of the eye, Dr Apel has published peer reviewed journals, lectured internationally and is involved in the training of future Ophthalmologists. He is a Senior Visiting Ophthalmologist and Chair of the Qualification and Education Committee at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Queensland Eye Hospital, and a Director of Queensland Laser Vision.

Dr Apel has a special interest in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, utilising cutting-edge Intraocular Lenses, Implantable Contact Lenses, and Laser Surgery techniques including LASIK and PRK. Dr Apel performs a high volume of corneal transplantations, including full thickness Penetrating Keratoplasty, and is a leader in his field for Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).

To facilitate better care and treatment of Keratoconus patients, he established the Keratoconus Care Clinic, with Riboflavin Corneal Collagen Crosslinking utilised in progressive cases. Other surgical interests include Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Autograft and the treatment of Ocular Surface Neoplasia. As a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist (DAO) for CASA, Dr Apel examines the ocular health of pilots, air traffic controllers, Police Force and the Defence Force personnel.

Founder of The Eye Health Centre, a collaborative care clinic model, Dr Apel is supported by six clinically trained optometrists who have technical expertise in advanced Contact Lens Fitting and the treatment of advanced Dry Eye Disease, including the E-eye IPL treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

Dr Apel is committed to clinical excellence, research and maintaining his skills at the frontlines of ophthalmic medical advances. He provides all his patients with the upmost care, attention and clinical precision in all areas of anterior segment ophthalmic management.

Jason Holland

Clinical Optometrist

Jason graduated from QUT in 1994 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Optometry) with Honours. He commenced work as a locum Optometrist in 1995 and spent time consulting in all corners of Australia. In 2001 he commenced work at The Eye Health Centre and has been providing pre and post-operative assistance at the Brisbane rooms since.

In 2012 he completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics and became a Credentialed Optometrist with CASA, the Aviation Authority in Australia. He now runs a busy Glaucoma and advanced Dry Eye Clinic at The Eye Health Centre Brisbane Clinic, and has lectured on Contact Lenses and Dry Eye in Australia and across South East Asia. Jason was the recipient of the Optometry Australia Qld Optometrist of the year in 2018.

Phuc Ngo

Clinical Optometrist

Phuc graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Optometry) in 2004 at QUT. In the early stage of his career he worked in private practices, large corporations and participated in locum work around Australia before setting back in Brisbane and
joining the optometry team at The Eye Health Centre. He has both the Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics certification as a Credentialed Optometrist for CASA. Phuc is based at the Booval practice, and has an interests in managing complex dry eye disease and contact lens fitting.

Jane Scott

Clinical Optometrist

Jane Graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Ophthalmic Optics with Honours, and a Diploma in Optometry. She has over 20 years experience in both corporate and private optometry practice in the UK, Sydney and now Brisbane.

Jane joined The Eye Health Centre team in 2011 and has developed a special interest in Multifocal Intraocular Lens Implants. Having had the Refractive Lens Exchange surgery, with insertion of Multifocal IOLs herself in 2014, she is well qualified to discuss the procedure with patients when needed. Jane performs pre- and post- operative assessments for Refractive and Cataract patients, and is currently involved in research into Multifocal IOL outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Jennifer Vieritz

Clinical Optometrist

Jennifer graduated in 1982 with a Diploma of Applied Science in Optometry and spent her early career in private and corporate optometry practice. She commenced work with Dr Apel at the completion of her Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2009. Jennifer has a particular interest in ocular disease and is heavily involved in the pre and post- operative care and management of patients at The Eye Health Centre.

Jennifer also serves as a Clinician and Supervisor at the QUT Optometry Student Clinic. In 2012, Jennifer received the Hamlyn Brier Clinical Optometrist of the Year Award reflecting her involvement in all facets of the profession.

Jessica Wilson

Clinical Optometrist

Jess graduated from Queensland University of Technology’s School of Optometry in 2007 with honours and is therapeutically qualified. She spent the first three years of her career as an optometrist for Laubman and Pank in Mount Ommaney. In 2010, she began work with Dr Andrew Apel as a clinical optometrist and Jess now plays an integral role in the patient’s pre- and post- operative management, primarily in the Wickham Tce practice. She also operates a clinic specialising in Keratoconus including diagnosis, monitoring and collagen cross-linking if required. Her special interests include corneal pathology and vision optimisation.

Jess also works in a refractive surgery practice -Qld Laser Vision in Springhill-where Dr Apel also operates.

James Fuss

Clinical Optometrist

James graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Optometry) with First Class Honours in 2011 and worked in private practice for the subsequent 5 years in Toowoomba as a general optometrist. In 2015, he completed a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics and during 2017 was involved in research on choroidal involvement in environmental factors which influence human myopia at QUT.

James Fuss currently practices as a clinical optometrist at The Eye Heath Centre. He is also a seasonal academic at QUT as a clinical supervisor for current students in the Optometry university program and a board observer for the Optometry Queensland and Northern Territory division of Optometry Australia. James has developed an interest in the treatment of anterior eye disease, dry eye syndrome and myopia development.

Leigh Holder

Clinical Optometrist

Leigh graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Optometry) with First Class Honours in 2009. She went on to complete the Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2011 and a Graduate Certificate of Health Services Management in 2017.

After working in corporate optometry for a number of years, Leigh joined The Eye Health Centre team as a Clinical Optometrist. She has since expanded her role to become the Public Relations Manager at The Eye Health Centre, while continuing to provide relief optometry cover.

Angela Dengate

Practice Manager

Angela joined the team at the Eye Health Centre in July 2017 as Practice Manager. She brings to the practice 25 years of working in medical administration and practice management. Over time she has gained extensive experience across several different medical specialties.

With the support of the experienced and dedicated staff at The Eye Health Centre, she strives to play her part in providing each patient with the highest quality of individualised care in what can sometimes be a stressful situation for them. She believes a compassionate and caring environment for the patient is paramount.
