Dr Apel’s Training and Affiliations
Dr Apel received his medical degree from the University of Queensland and completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane. Then, he undertook a corneal and external diseases fellowship program at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he furthered his knowledge and skills by learning from top experts in the field.
After returning to Brisbane, Dr Apel founded The Eye Health Centre. In addition to his busy private practice, Dr Apel is a Senior Visiting Ophthalmologist and Chair of the Qualification and Education Committee at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Queensland Eye Hospital and a Director of Queensland Laser Vision. Also, he is a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAO) for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and evaluates the health of pilots, air traffic controllers, police offers and military personnel so they can better serve the needs of the public.
Continually at the forefront of clinical research, Dr Apel has published numerous articles — including many in peer-reviewed journals — and presented internationally on his subjects of interest.
Dr Apel is an active member of numerous professional organizations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Australian Medical Association.
Specialty Interests
Dr Apel has a particular interest in the following areas:
- Cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lenses
- Refractive surgery, particularly LASIK and PRK
- Implantable contact lenses
- Corneal transplant surgery, including full-thickness penetrating keratoplasty and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty
- Pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft
- Treatment of ocular surface neoplasia
- Keratoconus

Dr Apel devotes all of his energy and focus toward clinical excellence, research and maintaining his skills as ophthalmic technology evolves. He stays up to date with new developments in the field of cataract and refractive surgery that can improve the precision, predictability and safety of treatment. By dedicating himself to extraordinary patient care, Dr Apel has helped countless people overcome problems that challenge their vision and ocular health.
Dr Apel also believes in passing along the knowledge he has accumulated over his long career to fellow ophthalmologists, to help advance the field. He has helped educate the next generation of ophthalmologists through numerous lecturer, tutor and teacher positions.
As the founder of The Eye Health Centre, Dr Apel has hand-selected a team of knowledgeable, friendly professionals, including seven clinically-trained optometrists and support staff, who share his vision of providing world-class care.
