Dr Andrew Apel is the founding ophthalmologist behind The Eye Health Centre, with locations across Brisbane in the City, Aspley, Wynnum and Springfield. With over 25 years of experience, Dr Apel is a respected leader in medical and surgical eye care, known for his patient-first approach and commitment to excellence. Whether treating complex vision issues or performing delicate laser surgery, he brings precision, care and deep expertise to every case. Outside the clinic, Dr Apel enjoys running and spending time with his three children. His dedication to both his patients and his family is at the heart of everything he does.

Dr John Hogden is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in corneal and external eye disease, cataract, anterior segment and refractive surgery. He is passionate about protecting and restoring vision, and believes every patient deserves personalised care tailored to their unique needs. Based across The Eye Health Centre’s Brisbane, Wynnum and Aspley locations, Dr Hogden is known for his calm, attentive approach and commitment to clinical excellence. Whether treating cataracts, correcting refractive errors or managing complex corneal conditions, he is dedicated to helping patients achieve their best possible vision with confidence and care.

Dr Michael Hogden

Dr Michael Hogden is a highly trained retinal specialist with expertise in the medical and surgical management of conditions affecting the vitreous, retina and macula. After completing ophthalmic surgical training in Queensland and serving as senior registrar at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, he pursued advanced subspecialty fellowships in the UK at both Oxford and Bristol Eye Hospitals. He has also trained internationally at leading centres in New York, including Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants and Columbia University’s Harkness Eye Institute. A recipient of the prestigious RANZCO Overseas Scholarship, Dr Hogden is committed to delivering world-class retinal care with precision and compassion.

Dr Gurmit Uppal

Dr Uppal is a highly experienced ophthalmic surgeon with subspecialty expertise in vitreo-retinal surgery and complex cataract procedures. He trained at London’s prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital – the largest eye centre in Europe – and completed dual vitreo-retinal fellowships there and at Sydney Eye Hospital, refining his skills in retinal disorders, trauma, and advanced surgical techniques. With a strong research background in macular surgery, Dr Uppal is committed to delivering the highest standard of care. He relocated to Brisbane in 2014 with his wife and two daughters, and is proud to be part of the expert team at The Eye Health Centre.

Dr Aaron Chidgey

Born and raised in Brisbane, Dr Aaron Chidgey brings a thoughtful, hands-on approach to eye care, with a special interest in traumatic eye injuries and retinal detachment surgery. Before becoming an ophthalmologist, he worked as an optometrist and trained under Dr Andrew Apel, developing a deep understanding of both medical and surgical eye care. Known for his steady focus and approachable nature, Aaron is passionate about helping patients navigate complex eye conditions with care and clarity. Outside the clinic, he’s a new dad who enjoys puzzles and tinkering in the shed, always curious, always problem-solving.

Carla joined The Eye Health Centre in 2024, bringing her passion for patient care and professional development to the role of Clinical Team Leader. With a background in both optometry and public health, she’s driven by a love of learning and supporting patients through every stage of their eye health journey. Originally from Auckland, Carla studied at the University of Auckland before relocating to Brisbane, where she embraced the sunshine and rediscovered her love for running. Warm, knowledgeable and always growing, Carla plays a key role in guiding both our clinical team and our patients.

Known for his relaxed, friendly approach, Andy believes in making each consultation feel like a catch-up with an old friend. Backed by one of the most experienced teams in Australia, he's passionate about delivering clear outcomes with a personal touch. Outside the clinic, Andy enjoys family time, sport and keeping up with his (much cooler) kids.

Bregan is a dedicated and experienced optometrist who brings both clinical excellence and a personal touch to every consultation. After completing a Master of Clinical Optometry and Bachelor of Vision Science at UNSW, Bregan spent several years delivering eyecare in rural and remote communities across Australia – an experience that shaped his patient-first approach. He has completed further studies in glaucoma, paediatrics and dry eye, and now runs dedicated clinics for these conditions at our Wynnum practice. Passionate about making meaningful connections, Bregan works closely with our doctors to provide thorough, compassionate care at every step.

Originally from Ireland but raised in Warwick, QLD, Clodagh brings a warm, down-to-earth approach to optometry. She studied at QUT in Brisbane and has since worked across South East Queensland – from her hometown to the Sunshine Coast and city practices – as well as spending 18 months living and working in Ireland. With a long-held fascination for eye surgery, Clodagh joined The Eye Health Centre in 2023 and hasn’t looked back. She loves being part of a team that blends clinical excellence with genuine care, and finds it incredibly rewarding to support patients through their eye health journey.

Henry brings a wealth of experience and a calm, considered approach to patient care. He completed his Bachelor of Vision Science and Master of Optometry (with Distinction) at QUT in 2015, including clinical placement at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Since then, he’s worked across Australia in both corporate and private practice, and completed the Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma through the Australian College of Optometry. With a special interest in ocular health and glaucoma management, Henry enjoys collaborating with ophthalmologists and supporting patients through every stage of their eye care journey.

Jennifer finds inspiration in every patient’s unique eye health journey. Starting her career in Toowoomba, she embraced the challenge of helping people see clearly and now approaches each patient like a puzzle to solve, navigating complex ocular conditions with the latest technologies and personalised care. As a Clinical Optometric Supervisor at QUT, she takes pride in guiding future optometrists while continuing to expand her own expertise. Jennifer has been honoured with the Hamlyn Brier Clinical Optometry Award and balances her busy career with a love of colourful shoes and good chocolate—small joys that keep her smiling every day.

Outside of work, Linda enjoys exploring new cafes around Brisbane and spending quality time with her family and friends.

Growing up in the country gave her a down-to-earth approach that helps put people at ease. Whether she’s walking her puppy along the Wynnum foreshore or planning her next overseas adventure with her husband and son, Megan brings that same sense of joy and connection to her work. When the snow calls (and her knees cooperate!), she’s happiest out on the ski fields – but day-to-day, it’s her patients and the Bayside community that keep her smiling.

After completing her university placement at The Eye Health Centre, Paras knew she wanted to be part of a team that puts patient wellbeing first. Now a valued member of that very team, she finds it incredibly rewarding to help people improve their vision and confidence. Outside the clinic, she enjoys time with her husband and big Greek family.

With over two decades of experience, Phuc Ngo brings expertise, empathy and a global perspective to his work. He specialises in complex dry eye management and advanced contact lens fittings, and is proud to care for patients at The Eye Health Centre in Booval. A QUT graduate, Phuc has worked across Australia in both private and corporate settings, and is also a Credentialed Optometrist for CASA. Outside the clinic, he gives back through his work with Australian Health Humanitarian Aid in Cambodia and serves on the executive board of The Dry Eye Society. He’s deeply committed to patient-centred, thoughtful care.

Silvie Hoang

Silvie is a therapeutically endorsed optometrist with a sharp clinical eye and a warm, approachable manner. After graduating with Distinction from QUT in 2016, she gained experience across a range of fast-paced practices before joining The Eye Health Centre in 2021. Silvie works closely with Dr Apel, Dr Hogden and Dr Uppal, assisting with assessments for cataracts, glaucoma, keratoconus, corneal grafts, Defence recruits and retinal cases. With a strong interest in primary care and early disease detection, she brings both precision and compassion to every consultation. Patients appreciate her thorough approach and genuine commitment to long-term eye health.

Jason enjoys taking the time to explain eye health clearly and works closely with ophthalmologists to ensure seamless continuity of care for his patients.
